What does it take to serve?

Eligibility

Any citizen of the United States between 17 and 63 years of age is eligible for enlistment in the MSSG. However there are restrictions such as you cannot have any felony conviction and cannot be an Active member of the Armed Forces of the United States, reserve or National Guard.  A high school education is required for enlistment while a college degree is required for all commissions.  A valid Government issued is also required

Service Obligation

There is no contractual time limit when joining, however continued membership is contingent upon completion of required training and satisfactory participation. You must be willing and available to deploy anywhere in the state when ordered to do so by the Adjutant General, which at that time you will be subject to the MCMJ (MS Code of Military Justice). In addition, when activated, you will be eligible to receive State Active Duty pay and travel allowance as stipulated in the Mississippi Code.

Physical Fitness

All members must be able to preform an annual PCA (Physical Capabilities Assessment) which consists of events that ensure basic mission readiness.  Other MOS (Mission Occupation Specialties) may require additional higher physical fitness standards.  Members may obtain medical waivers and profiles, as applicable, within US Army / Army National Guard regulations.

Customs & Courtesies

Members are required to render all customs and courtesies of the United States Military and US Army.

Uniform Wear and Personal Appearance

Members will wear the US Army uniform in accordance with US Army Regulation 670-1. Modifications will be made as authorized by the Adjutant General of Mississippi.  Members will also maintain proper personal appearance and grooming standards in accordance with US Army Regulation 670-1.  Deviations and waivers may be approved on a case by case basis.

Finance and Equipment

The MSSG is an alol volunteer, self-funded, self-equipped military unit which means each member will be responsible for purchasing the required uniforms and personal equipment needed for activation.  While on State Active Duty, mission specific gear and equipment, along with sustainment, will be provided.

Education and Basic Training

All non-prior service members will attend and complete Initial Entry Training.  Furthermore, progressing levels of Enlisted and Officer rank will require higher levels of education and training.  Prior Service members will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Specific MOS and On-the-Job Training Opportunities

The MSSG has multiple missions and mission support opportunities.  Some require specific licenses or certifications while some are on-the-job training (OJT). The OJT positions allow you to gain valuable experience and provide certifications to add to your resume.  With a willingness to learn and develop new skills, you can find a rewarding role that suits your interests.
